Our client is a worldwide leader in niche footwear looking to recruit an experienced Product Development Manager to help establish a new UK office. 

Reporting to the senior management team, you will be responsible for ranges which already sell across the UK, US, Europe and other locations, with further innovation in the pipeline. Partnering with Design and Production your role will be to establish control-related standards and procedures, ensuring product timelines and assist in commercialization to achieve on time product delivery dates.  Proven experience within footwear, ideally technical & innovative footwear, which extends to sneakers or dance shoes is required.

Product Development Manager – Footwear – The Job Opportunity

  • Oversee product development operations.
  • Manage and lead a cross-cultural team, create and implement effective development and commercialization processes.
  • Establish and manage a product development team to adhere to global calendar and timelines.  Ensure there is full understanding of the development process throughout the team and across the other key areas and departments.
  • To liaise between Development, Material Sourcing, Production, Customer Service, Sales and Distribution to ensure smooth product development, costing and customer satisfaction.
  • Part of a cross-functional team to develop new products following the process, including analyzing information to help set the sales forecast and financials.
  • Participates in market visits and is actively involved in Regional planning and review meetings.
  • Achieves corporate target margins for all applicable categories whilst providing customer and consumer value.
  • Researches and develops a focus for advanced concept projects as needed.
  • Together with Regional leadership teams, analyze consumer trends and information, to help identify product categories to enter as future sources of growth. 
  • Responsible for product management including product development, product testing / focus groups, portfolio information, pricing structure and staff management.  Also responsible for the launch of the new products in a timely & effective manner.
  • Work with the Material Sourcing Dept. to identify and select quality materials, components necessary to complete designated projects.
  • Work in alignment with the factories to build proper fit, function and aesthetic properties into each product.
  • Communicates inside and outside the company on a daily and weekly basis, to monitor projects and assure constant progress is made.
  • Facilitate the decision-making process that leads to on-time product confirmation and sample delivery dates by consistently reviewing the PLM tools and evaluating project status with the Product Creation team.

Product Development Manager – Footwear – The Person Specification

  • The ideal applicant will have a proven background in a similar role within footwear. Specializing in product development and critical path management experience. Previous brand management experience would be highly desirable.
  • Willingness and ability to travel abroad extensively. 
  • A general understanding of the basics of pattern engineering and subsequent costing/quality implications, model making, part drawings, drafting, 2D documentation, mold making, materials, customs, patents, royalties and basic manufacturing processes.
  • A general understanding of distribution and licensing arrangements. International experience and integration with the business units and key customers in USA, Europe, Asia and Canada.
  • Advanced footwear development and project management skills. 
  • Problem solving and results orientated.
  • Able to demonstrated leadership qualities, including the ability to recruit, motivate and mentor others within a team.  Ability to lead initiatives and project teams across the organization.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and take ownership for commercial decision making.
