Job Description

This is an exciting new role as Design Manager, for a leading supplier and manufacturer of lingerie, swimwear and nightwear.  Based within a fast paced studio environment working with retailers, e-tailers and brands, you will lead and develop a commercial design team. 

A ‘hands on’ design position, CAD skills and a knowledge of lingerie, swimwear or nightwear are desirable.

Design Manager  – The Job Outline

  • To understand all job roles, capabilities and functions within the design studio.
  • Demonstrate an on-trend vision, utilising confident Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop to create beautiful designs, presentations and mood boards etc, and are always of the highest standard and attention to detail. To drive new and innovative concepts/developments for customers, which meet requirements and are cost engineered and commercially viable.
  • To maintain and nurture strong relationships with buyers; from initial design presentation and throughout the design/order process – and demonstrate how to range build and help buyers with seasonal selections.
  • Demonstrate strong technical understanding of garment production, to ensure CADs can be self-checked prior to factory submission, and resolve any actions on arrival of initial sampling.
  • To liaise with factories regarding sample leadtimes and to follow up on new developments including sourcing, fabric & trims, new mould developments etc.  Monitor and update critical path and communicate changes.  Work closely with technical team at all times to ensure all products are technically viable for production, and to proactively make any necessary amends
  • Ensure all workloads for your team are monitored and critical dates are achieved. That all information is correct at point of both development and order handovers including BOM development and management.
  • To ensure the commercial designers are trained to a standard where they are accountable and responsible for their own designs, correct cads, productionable and cost effective.
  • Responsible for the management and mentoring of your design team. To identify training needs, look at improvement plans, monitor performance and progression reviews, and offer advice on an ongoing basis.  To support your team, motivate, seek and/or retain talent.
  • Build in strategies for improved working process such as the organization of fabric library, trim Library, Cost Matrix, Brand visions for each Customer etc.
  • Responsible for yearly and seasonal budget ie. sample buys, travel and comp shopping, and including department requirements, IT/software, training and recruitment.
  • To travel for inspiration/comp shop, trade shows, and to visit factories, suppliers and customer.
  • To continuously strive to build and drive an exceptional design team that are second to none!

Design Manager – The Person Specification

  • Experience within a similar Design Manager, or senior designer role with accountability for a team (minimum 3-5 years).  Lingerie/swimwear/nightwear or nightwear experience is desirable
  • Strong technical understanding of garment manufacturing process; from concept to finished production
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills: to develop and capitalise upon strong relationships with internal teams and external customers, buyers, factories and suppliers.
  • Confident team leadership experience: proven ability to motivate, lead, evaluate and recruit.
  • Highly attentive to detail, exceptionally well organised with ability to own and drive critical path deadlines for yourself and your team.
  • Commercially aware of best/poor performers and cost parameters to maximise opportunities
  • Accountable for budget and department reporting and documentation.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop (desirable) and Microsoft Office (essential).
  • Ability to travel : comp shops, trade shows, visit customers, suppliers and factories.
