Job Description

We are recruiting for an exceptional creative lead for an interim contract.  As Design Director your role will be the strategic leadership of the design team, producing lingerie, swimwear & nightwear ranges for retailers, e-tailers and brands. This is a fast paced working environment, and our client is an established manufacturer and supplier.  This position will be based from their offices in North Yorkshire.

Interim Design Director – The Job Outline

  • To understand all job roles, capabilities and functions within the design studio.
  • To time and resource manage the design studio.  Ensure all workloads are globally monitored, critical dates are achieved and adhered to in a controlled and professional manner, ensuring the best level of quality and service from your department.
  • Lead innovation, margin and engineering of all product categories.
  • To provide clear direction from a strategic and creative perspective, that will continuously endeavour to build customer confidence and relationships, existing and new.
  • To develop strong internal relationships with other departments to ensure there is a team mentality on each account and to fulfil its maximum potential.
  • To provide clear department leadership; to look at improvement plans and offer training and advice on an ongoing basis. Outlining a clear/concise strategy to assess the individual’s performance and progression within your team and within the company.  To motivate, seek and/or retain talent.
  • To support the Design Manager, and ensure the commercial designers are trained to a standard where they are accountable and responsible for their own designs, correct cads, productionable and cost effective.
  • Responsible for ensuring business continuity in the event of unexpected absences and unforeseen circumstances.
  • Build in strategies for improved working process such as the organization of fabric library, trim Library, Cost Matrix, Brand visions for each Customer etc.
  • Ownership, planning and reporting of yearly and seasonal budget ie. sample buys, travel and comp shopping. Accountable for budget requirements for your department, overhead requirements, IT/software, training and recruitment.
  • To actively participate in Board meetings, contribute to global vision, internal sourcing strategy and to enable continued opportunities for sustainability and growth.
  • To continuously strive to build and drive an exceptional design team that are second to none!

Interim Design Director– The Person Specification

  • Experience within a similar “head of design” or design director role with accountability for a team.  The ideal applicant will have experience within lingerie, swimwear or nightwear. Experience within the apparel sector is non negotiable.
  • Strong technical understanding of garment manufacturing process from concept to finished production
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills: to develop and capitalise upon strong relationships with internal teams and external customers, buyers, factories and suppliers.
  • Excels at leadership and senior management: ability to motivate, lead, evaluate and recruit.
  • Highly attentive to detail, exceptionally well organised with ability to own and drive critical path deadlines for yourself and your department.
  • Commercially aware of best/poor performers and cost parameters to maximise opportunities
  • Accountable for budget and department reporting and documentation.
  • Ability to travel : comp shops, trade shows, visit customers, suppliers and factories.
